This means that diabetics – approximately five million people in the UK – could live longer lives if they avoid foods like pies and sausages at dinner.

According to the study, fat in the British favorites can cause swelling in the blood vessels and raise the pulse rate, putting extra pressure on the heart overnight when it should be resting.

Bacon, burgers, ham, ready meals, nuggets, and pepperoni are examples of processed meats, but not home-cooked cuts like steaks or chops.

According to the study, people should eat green vegetables with a glass of milk for dinner to improve their health.

"Nutritional guidelines for diabetes should include the optimal consumption times for foods in the future," said Dr. Qingrao Song of Harbin Medical University in China.

"We discovered that eating potatoes in the morning, whole grains in the afternoon, greens and milk in the evening, and less processed meat in the evening was associated with better long-term diabetes survival."

Dr. Song went on to say that when people eat certain foods may be just as important as portion sizes.

The study analyzed data from 4,642 diabetic Americans and compared their diet to their long-term health.

It discovered that people who ate the most processed meat in the evenings were 74% more likely to die of heart disease than the general population.

The study, published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, also discovered that people who ate white bread, dough, and pastries late in the day had a higher risk of heart disease.
