Commuters should expect to pay more for transportation fees as the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) opens talks with the government about raising existing fares in response to recent fuel price increases.
GPRTU to propose another 20% hike in transport fares over rising fuel cost

The Union implemented a 15% hike in transportation charges barely a month ago but now claims that another increase is required due to the huge surge in fuel prices at the pumps.

This time, the largest transportation union has stated that it is considering a possible 20 percent increase.
"A fare increase will be implemented at all costs to cushion our members." It will arrive. We must address two difficulties if we are to make adequate adjustments. We are currently asking for roughly 20% this time around. It's actually plausible.

"We are going to speak from our experience with the 15%, whether it was good or terrible," GPRTU General Secretary Godfred Abulbire stated on Eyewitness News.
According to industry players, diesel is selling at GHS 10 per liter, while petrol has crossed the GHS 9 barrier at select Oil Marketing Companies.

Taxes and subsidies

The GPRTU, on the other hand, claims that the persistent rise in the cost of petroleum products must be curtailed due to the negative impact on revenue generated by its members.

As a result of the significant increase, Godfred Abulbire stated that the Union will be engaging government to look into lowering petroleum taxes or possibly introducing fuel subsidies.

"Another topic we will discuss is whether the government should waive some taxes." We want to see if the government listens this time. If not, the fare increase will undoubtedly occur. Another topic we'll examine with the Transport Ministry is whether or not subsidies can be implemented."a
